How they inspired the pilots and the sense of style that they had retained even to this day. I wanted to show the materializing of one of these images into a sort of protective totem-like spirit. I enjoyed working on this subject so much (done entirely from pencil to finish in PS) that I hope to do a series of these gals in different air combat scenarios.
The second in a series I am doing angelicizing the nose art of
WW2 planes.
This is another image that had come to mind of a squadron of P-40 Warhawks (most famous for the planes with the shark teeth on their nose) scourging the french country side for armory and enemy air support.

While trying to keep that vintage look-I wanted to push the vibrancy of the pallette on this one in contrast to the B-25 girl.

As always- Done entirely in Photoshop (sketch included), I already have visions of the third in the series. Something a little more exotic.
Addition to initial entry- I made some changes based on some of the great feedback that I have already recieved on this piece from this forum_DEC 02 at 10pm

I'll attach a step by step process of this as early as I can in the thread.

I purposefully chose a more difficult and uncomfortable view and pose. But still graceful in a way that I could better capture this peaceful moment of lifelessness in nature.

I didn't want the entire series to be made up of easy pin up or conventional portrait like poses. I wanted to take this one to a different place and feel. There are far too many intricate and
amazingly detailed paintings of gorgious women out there.I wanted to make this one special by making more than just a painting of a pretty girl, and
hopefully evoke some emotion from the viewer- other than just an apreciation of a pretty girl.
Albeit the Japanese were not known for putting pin up art on the noses of their planes, but with the strong spirituality their pilots lived by- I thought it fitting to give one of their planes a "spirit" of it's own. I opted to inter twine the victory gal with the essence of a dragon to add to it's prescence and tie the girl into the subject matter of the painting better.

This particular interpretation of the victory Gal series takes a different turn in concept and subject matter.

Imagine it is nearing the end of the war. The SS is beginning to get desperate in their attempts to develope new weaponry.
They turn to their occult research- are able to somehow trap the spirits of the victory Gals and then in a frankenstein-ish gruesome manner fuse them with their new jet technology.

The offspring being a lifeless deadly anti air and ground unit that can lead troops into battle, and also command and support an air assault.

Yes this pulls on Indiana Jones-ish fantastical stereotypes but was one that I had done as an early concept sketch before painting any of the victory Gals which I wanted to bring back to life.
Sketched originally by hand and in my tutorial on drawing and portfolio as well, scanned and then painted in Photoshop.

It's a little more sci fi, but I hope you enjoy this change up in the series.
Thanks for waiting so patiently for the next installment in this series.
Respectfully,

Ophelia revisited

I likie to think everyone/thing deserves a second chance- I had posted this painting a long time ago. It caused or sparked a few debates and really hadn't gotten to a finished state. I decided not to give up on this piece, and totally revisit it more than a year later with fresh eyes and a few new tricks up my sleeve.
I recropped on the image, went back and dug up some of the feedback I had recieved from friends and peers, and give this girl another chance.
This piece has evolved into a real atypical composition- maybe out of neccessity from existing past flaws, but still in a different way I wanted it to come to an assymetrical balance.

With her being born of a very stylized expressioned loose drawing- parts of her are still uncomfortably proportioned, I spent much of my efforts trying strike a sensibility of realism with her face and expression while keeping the rest of her in the realm of believability. The rest was getting the rest of the elements in the painting to compliment, not be overpowered by the main focus- but not to compete with it either.
Many an hour passed as I tried to walk this fine line.

I hope you guys enjoy this rework effort, and those of you who have not seen her previous incantation- I hope you like this work for the first time (I will post the pencil if this thread gets accepted- but no- will not step back and repost the original painting with all of its flaws-sorry)

BigBlockGal_396

To continue my love of marrying stylized pin up with machinery and tie in my passion for classic cars I have decided to think ahead of the completion of the 12 Victory Gals and compose my first in a series of "BigBlockGals".
This is Big Block Belle- the car is my pride and joy dream car my 69 Chevelle. Who may unfortunately be on the chopping block to raise money for Teddy. My wife has been amazing in pushing it as far back from the money raising efforts for therapy, but alas unless the Victory Gals calender can get a sponsor and take off- it may be an inevitable but neccessary loss. In any event this was pencilled on the computer- I used a self taken photo of my car to exact the proportions of the grill and such, but ultimately judging on the painting there isn't anything left of the initial reference.

I want to make this about expressive idealized figures, interesting color choices and visual impact while taking the traditional car pin up painting thing and giving it a little more artistic merit intergrity opposed to the ussual beefcake magazing photo spreads. I am hoping that some hot rod mags may be interested in giving there pages a new look as well.

Anyways, enough babbling. I hope you like!
Don't worry there are going to be some Fords and Mopar beauties to come.

Regards,

PS- I want to at the very least footnote Velinov's amazing work for inspiring me to make some changes in my style for this series. I was hoping to incorporate some of his great brush work and image building vision into my existing methods.
I hope he doesn't mind me trying to learn and build on my own work from his skill.

Help! for my son Ted

This illustration was perhaps the hardest thing I have ever done. Not because of content or style but the subject matter.
Why because it is a painting of my 2 year old boy Teddy. Who has been recently diagnosed with autism.

It is based on a few principles (well unfortunately realities)
Children with autism need early intervention- when their minds are still in that sponge like pliable stage- so that they can develop new pathways of learning and have a better chance at leading the closest thing to what we call a normal life.
Currently in the state of Wisconsin there is an extremely long waiting list to get aid from the government to pay for the proper therapy-called a waiver (aprox. $100,000-$150,000 a year)

The other painful thing is to know that there is a real great child in there. I say "in there" because (as hopefully illustrated in my painting) they are aware and intelligent yet cannot simply communicate or show their love or emotions, which must be so horribly frustrating. (Hence what I feel everyone sees when they think of a child with autism throwing a violent tantrum) Imagine being trapped mentally in what would feel like a permanent claustrophobic cell, wanting to cry out to those you love but not having the voice to do so.

This image was created because of the premises and how sadly and ironically people do not know enough about this condition, yet we all know and love our (what I refer to as) death TV. Shows like Law and Order, CSI, Cold Case, Without a Trace, Bones, etc. Where they will boost their ratings by having horrible atrocities like being buried alive to chill the viewer's imaginations. Worse yet they will use children in their stories to further stir our emotions (Law and Order SVU in my humble opinion by far the most ruthless in doing this).

Anyways- this isn't about violence on TV- It's about how my son is in a way buried alive, and much like the way the shows on TV go- there is a limited amount of time to metaphorically "reach him".

I sincerely hope you like this image and find it stirring enough to help me out. I know a lot of you, and have tried to help many of you out with your artwork in the past,
I do not intend to presume you owe me anything for that- I simply implore that you take a couple minutes out of your day, tell your friends to visit and follow the link that I have provided below to politely voice your opinion in asking the government to lower the time it takes to get children like my son help.
Also to show your support for an upcoming mandate that will push insurance companies to cover children with autism's therapy, for which they currently do nothing.
It doesn't have to be much- a sentence or two and a copy to this link. You do not have to be from Wisconsin or even this country to show your support.

Please consider.
I f you haven't seen these before- I am more than happy to bring them up on this forum.

I consider these almost stylized matte paintings.
Obvious photoreference is a must to try and keep a semblance of historical accuracy, yet (as with most of my swork) when I actually paint- I always try to infuse the subject matter with a kind of a hyper -idealized skew to to everything.
In attempt to take an already dramatic scene to a more intense level. Naturally balance and flow of composition also works it's way into my paintings if I can

Painted entirely in Photoshop

This is a painting done for a book cover.

It was pencilled by hand (will add to this thread later)
keeping a sense of dynamic pose and motion in mind.

The challenge of the asignment was to produce requested
difficult foreshortenning. It took several attempts at the arm and sword to make it convincingly come outwards but not directly towards the viewer. I didn't want it coming directly towards the viewer because it would have created an odd
shape and visual effect.

It was painted entirely in Photoshop.
started with glazing in colours over the original scanned pencil
and then carefully adding semi opaque colours on additional layers. I wanted to avoid relying on any dodging or burning.

To help create a sense of depth I sampled colours from the background and lightly screened them over the distanced elements of the figure.

Thanks to some excellent feedback I made some revisions to this piece:

I have gone through and removed the dodge and burn highlights, replacing them with painted values and simplifying them so that the figure reads easier.

I have also reduced the unneccessary coimplication in his legs, so that they don't draw too much focus or confuse the viewer as to what is going on. The description called for special boots, so I kept some of the design in, but pushed it a bit back behind some smoke to keep them in check.

Thanks everyone for the comments and crits.

Tutorial

Hi all,
Sorry for the delay in presenting the tutorial to go with these images.

If it'll make it up at all I'll add more concepts on the back end of this thread (I believe currently page 4 or 5) as well as a larger version in colour and a larger version of the tutorial in my portfolio.

Please take everything I say with a grain of salt - in that it might not be the best traditional way to approach drawing, but it is what I have found works well for me. I do hope that you may find some inspiration or tips or approaches useful from this thread.

Some of the points noted are based off having new artists write me from my site with similar questions regarding illustration. Als observed by myslef from asking to see where they are currently (which I ussually do-no point in offering advice if you don't know what level the artist is that you are giving advice to)
The most common areas that I have found over the years is that there is a reluctance to loosen up with the figure and let it flow more naturally. More than oft samples seem stiff and rigid in their pose- standing straight as an arrow upright without a sense that they are supporting their own weight confidently.
The most common advice that I offer is:
-get into an anatomy class, and really make the most of those warm up gesture poses (the 10 second to 2 minute poses- ussually at the beginning of the class) If you can learn to win this initially battle when approaching an illustrative problem, then you are most likely to win the war.

-My second piece of advice is to come and visit CGtalk as often as possible, this anatomy thread is exceptional as a valid work of reference.

-And last is Draw More!! I am guilty of this just as much as the next Joe. The more you draw the more comfortable you becaome with how anatomy works. It doesn't even have to be human anatomy or anything born of this world. If you are comfortable in your own "drawing skin" that you really understand how joints work and distrubute weight- you can convincingly pull off everything from aliens to dragons. I often get caught up with work and life- rarely finding the time to just sit down and draw- It really shows when it comes time to put pencil to paper (ussually in the quality of my work and in the pain and agony that it takes to get my ideas on down and looking good)

I am going to leave the digital portion of my tutorial to the upcoming workshop hopefully to intice as many of you as I can top participate

At the end of this thread I will reply to everyone on an individual basis who was kind enough to write in, support this thread, show enthusiasm towards a workshop and vote.

Hope you enjoy the new images and tutorial.

See you in April,
Repsectfully,Gangus
It was painted directly in Photoshop- I did some quick thumb sketches in Greyscale, and then (unlike my other work) started painting with colour from the start to finish.
It's a looser more freeflowing technique.

NOTE- Be sure to check page 2 of this thread for close ups
if you want to see the imdividual images larger

This is perhaps one of my greatest personal achievements.

It was inspired by my love of everything Norse and the macabre brilliance of Edward Gorey's Gashly Crumb Tinies.

I decided to one day write out a poem based on the ABC's of how Vikings can die- once per week I would do a 5 by 5 inch pencil drawing to go with each letter. On the weekend I would paint it in Photoshop and Painter. I did this until I had the entire alphabet- I then had a run of 2000 limited high quality lithos done as a collectable poster (measuring some 39 inches tall!)

It won a first place Summit award- I wish there was a way I could enter the entire piece as a whole into Expose, but I don't know how they could display it if it were chosen.

I have been selling the prints signed and numbered from my
paypal address: gangus@ravensoft.com (shipping included) for a little while, and they have been doing good.
I am currently hoping to have it turned into a coffee table book but am still looking to find the right partner to publish.

I thought I would share this work with you guys as it is my proudest self-project finished to date, born of dedication and passion. I'm hoping someday I will compile enough Victory Gals to make a similar claim.

If you are having trouble seeing them large enough-I have added larger versions in my CG portfolio for you to get a closer look at.
Please tell your network mates to check it out- I love it when this work can strike somebody's funny bone.
